The portion of food dedicated for tissue regeneration varies depending on the body's requirements and diet quality and quantity. The rest is converted into energy and fat and influences body weight.

It is one of the lesser-known nutritional issues. However, over the years, attempts have been made to explain the phenomena observed through the energy invested in food digestion. My explanation is entirely different and is not unique to people with CKD.

Surprisingly! Processed foods make us gain weight much faster than the same calories as natural foods. Not all calories are equal. The amount of energy in food and beverages available for the body's use is not fixed and is not uniform for everyone! The "calorie is a calorie" tautology is wrong.

Since food routing between the two primary uses (tissue building and maintenance, as opposed to available energy and fat accumulation) is not fixed and differs from person to person, summarising the calories in food and beverages is inaccurate.
