The gallbladder stores the bile and releases it when needed for the duodenum, mainly to digest and emulsify fatty foods. Blockage of the gallbladder violates the acid-base balance in the gut and affects the entire immune system. The most common symptoms are constipation, flatulence, nail or vaginal fungus, (in women) headaches, sinusitis, cough, and general weakness due to a load on the immune system. In acute situations, inflammation of the gallbladder causes sharp pain.
The gallbladder tends to produce gallstones, especially in women, mainly due to fluctuations in sex hormones. Obstruction of the bile ducts is one of the prominent characteristics of patients with chronic digestive tract diseases.
