Discussion: Are threats of divorce self-fulfilling?

Many couples find themselves in loud arguments, with shouting and threats. The question is, does the threat of abandonment, divorce, withholding of funds, and more fulfill itself? Threats of divorce are often part of conflicts that reach the stage of threats that if you don't do as I please, I initiate divorce. Conflicts also exist between couples who live good marital lives, but the threat of divorce is a "doomsday weapon."
