Alcohol addicts usually drink alcoholic beverages much more than non-addicts (the same applies to addictive smokers), but the definition is not quantitative. Addiction is a loss of control and a strong urge to drink alcoholic beverages at any moment without rejecting immediate satisfaction. (Also true for addicted smokers)
In the complete sense, temporary abstinence from drinking or smoking - is not withdrawal! Withdrawal is the loss of drive and elimination of the reward mechanism caused by drinking alcoholic beverages or smoking. This energetic-psychic process is much more complex than abstinence, resulting from restraint.
