Is cremation a more brutal solution compared to burial?

In India and various cultures, it is customary to cremate the body of the deceased. Presumably, the tradition also had the purpose of protection against infectious diseases. Also, in the West, you will find a school that prefers cremation. Some religions and traditions require burial, so there is no question of justice here or what is better. Graves consume large areas while burning wood (there are also electric solutions) damages the environment. The question to me is not an ethical question but mainly a cultural and religious question and personal preference. To me, the thought of ash is less repulsive than the thought of the decay of the flesh.
